clove hitch is just the most general purpose, do it all hitch that can be tied super easily anywhere on the rope or around an object. i much prefer the groundline hitch which is tied almost the same way as a clove hitch and can be used in the same ways but is more secure yet easier to untie at the same time. it also doesn't roll and sits well even around irregular shaped objects. only downside is you can't use the two loop method to tie it and when you slip if off the post it cinches into an overhand instead of a straight rope like the clove hitch.

round turn and two half hitches is more of a knot for tying a rope end to an object, like tying a boat or a hammock to a tree, meanwhile clove hitch can be used for making fences, clipping into the rope with a carabiner, tying a bag(ground like hitch is also known as a sack knot), making rope ladders, etc.

it's a useful knot but for that purpose there's also the pile hitch which is super easy and quick to tie and learn and is also an excellent tying hitch that doesn't even need a rope end to tie, although it does need an open post to slip over and can't be tied around an object it can't be slipped over, like a tree or an eyelet. these knots all have their uses and all perform good within them but you can make do with fewer of them and clove hitch has the broadest range of applications.
