You're not downshifting correctly. Let's say you want to shift from 4 to 3, or even 4 to 2 if you brake enough and get within the appropriate speed range, what you do is you push the clutch in, go to the gear you want to go to, in this case, 3 from 4, and with the clutch still pressed in, rev the car by giving a shot of gas (more or less of a shot depending on how fast you are going for the gear you want to enter, just make sure the gear is valid for the speed range you are currently in), then immediately let the clutch out. In this case, you wouldn't have to let the clutch out slowly (to avoid that annoying and dangerous wheel skidding and tire screeching) because you downshifted AND rev-matched.
