That little dude is the backbone of your logistics network. There are small production chains, similar to Anno kind of. Your iron and coal mines produce raw resources, your trucks transport them to your smelter which uses electricity (from powerplants) + manpower (from apartments+offices) to smelt them into steel. Then you transport your steel to the Assult factory to build your tanks and cannons.

The trucks can work on automatic, or can be manually set with a route. The truck ai isn't perfect, but I found it always got the job done eventually. But I set a route up for my key production chains, which is kind of similar to anno with sea routes. Kind of, just much much simpler.

Some of the sound effects aren't great either. At some point there needs to be a new content pipeline that allows runtime loading, making it easy to mod that kind of stuff. OpenTTD is a good example of this, an old game where they basically rewrote the source and recreated a lot of the art in higher quality.
