>thought-terminating cliche
like the jew here said, but the SU, a nominal superpower was in a permanent crisis because nothing worked. If we had the internet in the 80s, the amounts of memes and webms would have easily dwarved anything from China & India
>be me, Sergei Ivanevitch, son of Ivan and Olga who once met in a Gulag
>actually my father raped my mother but it was legal back then
>stand in line for bread
>4 hours later, no more bread
>I still stand in line, it's good, I have broken toaster with me, I can maybe exchange for something else
>notice everybody in line carries broken toaster
>maybe it's best to go home
>through 5 foot of snow
Nothing worked, everybody stole, everyone had to become a criminal. The economy was a joke and still hasn't recovered because of this crap. Think dollar money isn't real. It kinda isn't but the rubel back then had a distinct touch of Weimar.
So yeah, the war WAS a big deal because war eats productivity. It's great in the short term (unless you can literally loot, which Soviets always did. Good luck in Afghanistan, though!) but you can only kick the can down the road for so long.
