I dunno if it's required, but I think some people do it. I haven't used mixed-playspace tracking since FBT with the oculus rift though, where you had to wave the controller+tracker in funny figure-8s for them to align.

These days I can't be fucked to even put on FBT anyway. So that's why somebody more motivated might actually like the gloves. Again, the little joystick/buttons on the side of your index finger is super convenient and keeps your hands in a way more natural position when you're just sitting around and talking/gesturing occasionally. But it's a pain. Plus if you're zucced anyway there's camera hand tracking.
