Montero is a genuinely pretty good album and the launch of it was fantastic. People were really up for an irreverent, stylish take on gay black men straddling the line of boyish and feminine, and he's just a funny guy to watch too. It seemed like he was going to be a revitalising presence in pop music for the foreseeable future, particularly because he started out as an obsessive pop stan himself so entertaining visuals/etc mattered to him.
Insane how badly it's all fallen apart, between whatever the fuck happened with his partial facial paralysis and then going full Kony 2012 in the middle of the road recently. Nobody had any idea for how to follow up his debut and it's killed him. Depressing.
