One could argue that his refusal to get 'free work' is to avoid feeling indebted with someone and wanting to keep things purely professional. If someone does several thousands of dollars' worth of labor for you because you're friends and you accept it, it kinda becomes difficult to say "We're just business partners" later.

Legitimately, what reason is there to not just tentatively return to being friends with Vedal and return to the project if she's truly over him, other than her being still in love with him?
