part of the shopping cart theory I think relies on the individual being unaware of the theory itself, as well as being alone so they aren't pressured by anyone else because the whole point of the theory is the individual's integrity to do the right thing. If they are aware of the theory then they might do it just to reassure themselves "since I did that thing I saw on Reddit, I'm a good person!".
But I don't think that has any correlation with tipping or not tipping. Comparing the two just sounds like they were trying to shame you into tipping.
