I keep seeing this quote thrown around and it feels disingenuous. I don't think he's implying people shouldn't feel empathy, rather I belive he was trying to make a point about how language and meanings have shifted across different eras. As in, in previous times people didn't use the specific word "empathy" as often or necessarily in the same contexts we see in modern times. Rather they likely had a different conception overall.
