When you look at how quickly and disastrously humanity has "evolved" in just a few centuries it's really not hard to believe there were highly advanced civilizations that pre-date us and possibly reached well beyond our technological grasp - but who ultimately went extinct.

Humans are doomed because we possess qualities that are advantageous in the early stages of development and detrimental in the latter, such as empathy. It's good to be kind and helpful when numbers are small and every person counts; now we literally expend highly refined fossil fuels on jetliners to fly pallets of scientifically formulated food rations to be airdropped on diseased hordes who never even invented the WHEEL.

One might argue humans, or at least most of us, deserve to go extinct.
