Things like dehydration, starvation, hypothermia are EXTREMELY boolean and boring:
You either have know how to get fresh water or you die.

But is walking a character from house-to-house in an empty world fun?
No. It's fun because there are ZOMBIES you have to avoid. Without combat the food-scarcity is meaningless.
