It's a bit of psychology. IF I want to steal your gold, and then do it, there is a risk you will then blame me for stealing the gold, so in order to prevent that, I blame you for stealing MY gold. And as long as I tell everyone you stole my gold before you start claiming I stole your gold, then people will assume that I was telling the truth and you are lying because I told them first and the bias is always to believe what is already believed and to deny what conflicts with what is already believed. So I merely have to beat you to the punch and publicly blame you for everything I do, and then I'll never face any consequences while you get punished for doing the things that I did. It's classic blame-shifting narcissism.
