Most of the hate on MKW is misdirected and /v/ not actually understanding what the issues are. /v/ complains about it as though having additional content that falls short of its potential on top of an already complete game with a full set of fun and well designed tracks makes it bad. You could simply just erase the open world without replacing it with anything and you would still have a full game with fun new mechanics that is better than MK8 at launch. The actual problem with MKW is that it is structured to force you to play the open world connections between tracks while reducing the amount of time you spend on the actual tracks unless you play in a private lobby or locally. I personally like the open world in free roam, but the open world tracks are not fun to race on since making over 200 well designed courses is simply not possible. Spending more time waiting in the lobby between races than you do racing on the good courses is just unreasonable. It is a great game, but Nintendo reduces your ability to play the good parts and essentially wastes your time when playing online. It could be fixed with a simple patch that just gives you more control over course selection when playing online.
With all that said, I do enjoy the classic Nintendo vs Sega console war banter. MKW plays better and has more fun courses than the Sonic demo and network test, but I'm just going to play both.
