Telling modmakers who paywall to pound sand is morally right, if they ask for something on the side instead of just flat out forcing you to pay then it's less egregious. The problem is with modding nowadays being viewed as a second job akin to say the same shit modelers and artists. Mod authors wanna try and make some money from it as compensation, whereas it used to be a labor of love and enjoyment for the product they were modifying.
