it is unique to mecha anime. False information by hearsay/word of mouth & eva's impactful medium changing success made the western fandom assume anything before it was Transformers tier slop. The series was filled with myths & legends surrounding it which definitely played a hand in it too. Not to mention that the western fandom did not have access to other mecha anime pre 90's & historical context being scarce.
