This is NOT played for laughs. This character is having the hardest moment of his life trying to to rape the adopted daughter of the series' main character, who is standing around the corner "casually" waiting for him to make one wrong move.

Following this scene Kiryu knows that he can trust Soejima and will do what he can to help him, because he too has been in jail for 20 years and respects the self control required for a man already wanted by the law and facing a death sentence to hold himself back from doing the wrong thing.
