he's not very heroic nor inspiring but the story tries to convince you that he is but in the most backhanded way imaginable. For somebody aspiring to be hero he didn't really try before he was promised power, knowing full well (being a hero nerd and all) that physical ability is required even with quirks. That's like dreaming of being in the nba without learning how to dribble, shoot, or pass. He does try hard once he gets power but nothing that really sets him apart from the other guys aiming for the top

He is selfless I guess but it's weird in that he lacks the day to day good guy stuff and most of his moments have be him barging in on somebody's trauma. One of the most bothersome things about the framing of the story and how it played out is that Deku really didn't do anything at all to change the world or how things worked but the story tries to credit him. At the end of the day he's just a vessel for OfA which damn near any of those other driven, kind, and caring hero kids could have been with similar, probably even better results. His "big moment" to the world is he tried hard but looked like a bitch so that "inspired" other people somehow. He also never really achieved his main goal of greatest hero and quite frankly never came even remotely close to All Might's legacy. Then there's the ending
