How is it tryhard? It's very simple, just blonde girl with simple white/blue naval color scheme outfit and a paper boat motif. Fish tail and cat ears are just the things she wanted because she likes those, and I don't see them interfering with design much. In fact, her cat ears are very well done in terms of animation, they give her extra expressiveness.
