You can learn. Just don't stress out about it and be patient. Most importantly be kind to yourself, Anon.
You can practice on some plastic card, just to get a feel for the paint and the working time. That way you don't stress about your minis and make yourself feel bad. There are a ton of great resources online. You can watch people do it in real time and paint along if that helps.

You could also just layer your highlights if that fits your inclinations better. Figure out what works for you. It's a creative endeavor, there is no wrong way of doing it.
