Why did the most prominent NATO members go along with bringing in new members right up to Russia's borders?

How does it benefit a defensive alliance to

>to defend countries that are much weaker than the existing membership
>and are also the most vulnerable since they border Russia
>while knowing that such a move can only antagonize and feed the paranoia of a potential adversary?

Were the U.S., U.K., and Germany just acting altruistically to help the people of Eastern Europe, with no concern for their own benefit?
