I also want to talk about Mei in general as I have been thinking about her lately. It is believed that Fuyuko and Asahi are definitely the highlight of Straylight, while Mei is kind of the grease in the machine, or to be honest, the third wheel of the group. But the more I explore the group, the less I’m sure. Not only are there a couple of episodes (e.g VS) that are dedicated to Mei, I reckon Mei is actually the highlight of the unit. Asahi and Fuyuko’s arguing about something can be a little stale, and how Mei reacts to the duo does bring some fresh air in the group.

But the thing is, I am just not that certain about Mei and her unpopularity. The story strangely establishes that Mei is not that popular compared to the duo at a very early stage (in the second story ‘WorldEnd BreakDown’). But is that because the writer intentionally wants to create someone who looks less sharp than the duo so Mei can smooth things out, or is that a subtle nod to the unpopularity in real life? If so, is it some sort of self-fulfilling prophecy? I just don’t know. What is the writer’s play here?
