Yeah with 3d animation the artists get trapped into this mindset that they have to do everything by rigging and animating a single character model. So you lose out on the sort of off-model exaggerated expressions that are common in 2d animation.
This is one of the few 3d animated movies that breaks this convention and models a unique face for a moment that lasts less than a second.
Another one that comes to mind is Michells vs the Machines.
