Since I have seen a lot of fake news about alleged German security guarantees, I thought I would talk briefly about this. Plenty of major accounts reported that Germany plans to deliver around 480 IFVs yearly. This is not true. Let's dive into it.

The SPIEGEL article, which is the original source, states that the German government plans to equip four Ukrainian mechanised brigades as part of its security guarantees. Here we already have the first discrepancy. Various accounts have referred to a report in The Telegraph, which quotes the SPIEGEL article but speaks of five Ukrainian mechanised brigades instead of four. I guess a simple mistake on The Telegraph's part?

According to the SPIEGEL article, this involves around 480 vehicles yearly. However, contrary to what has been shared here, it doesn't mean that all vehicles are IFVs. The original source itself also just speaks of deliveries “including IFVs”. Part of mechanised brigades are all kinds of vehicles, not just IFVs.

I've talked to @Jeff21461 about this and to his knowledge part of a mechanised brigade are three mechanised battalions as well as a tank battalion. This would leave us with a total requirement of 396 IFVs OR 372 APCs (or a mix) and 124 MBTs as per official Ukrainian army requirement list from 2018 (no other has been published since then).
