I've thought of maybe doing something where I strictly use only the colors of the NES palette, do you think using fullbright would be a mistake?
It would definitely not be authentic NES graphics by any stretch of the imagination, but I want to try to capture dark yet colorful visuals like in Batman, Vice Project Doom, using dithering and a lot of pitch black for shadows.
Thinking about what you said, this kind of visual style may not be 100% conducive to first person threedee, so how would this best be interpreted?
