It's because our system of government and economics does not reward intelligence and critical thinking beyond a certain point. The system rewards obedience and docile compliance.

If you are smart enough, then you will find all kinds of flaws and injustices in the system. At which point smart people either refuse to participate in an unjust system or rebel against it. Both get you nowhere and labeled an outcast.
