It would have been acceptable if Kakashi had done this to try a different approach to help people in danger of falling into the cycle of hatred compared to how his pep talks to Sasuke failed miserably or if Shikamaru had at some point realized that he was still woefully underprepared for Akatsuki hax.

But in the end both Kakashi and the narrative just fellate Shikamaru for being a good little soldier that loves the will of fire so much that he is willing to kill himself and his teammates for it while at the same time prioritizing murdering some dude that wronged him over anything else.
