Short answer?
The administration previous to the PSUV (ruling party) made everything possible for the PSUV to reach power and get us in trouble we are today, from fucking the economy, privatizing every asset and making the life impossible for every common joe from 1989 to 1999.
During that decade you had to decide. "You pay the electricity or buy food". While we gave away all the resources to USA, we didnt get any benefit from it and poverty was in its highest.
No one talks about it, but 1980 and 1990 all the knowledge related to keeping those industries, telecomunication, oil, etc. It was all foreign technicans, we didnt had any capacited personnel, we were just exporting all our stuff for getting nothing in exchange to develop our industry.
Why?
Half corruption from local politicians (socialists btw, since 1960) but half of it because we didnt had any Nationalism, because back in 1955 it was deemed hostile to America, just because we were like El Salvador back then during the heat of Cold War and we were considered a menace.
So not really mate. The difference between previous administration and the current century socialist is that one selling themselves to China and the other was selling themselves to America, but citizens eat the bone.
Some countries are more complex than others, Salvador was a mix of good luck and the "Right Men in The Wrong place" to do the thing.
