The ugly ass Gears of War art style typical of UE engine games of the time kind of grew on me. Didn't like it at the time but I'm ok with it now.
Shame it devolved into open world shit in the sequels.

Not really. I don't think the people saying this ever played a Batman game. The reason why it's called "magnetism" or "suck to target" is because that's exactly what it does, it's not just that attacks have forward momentum or big hitboxes, you literally don't know what animation will play when you press the attack button because the game will choose for you to make sure you'll hit the enemy.
I think too many people joining the discussion on action games now were too young to be discussing them back in the mid 2000s, so they just repeat stuff they heard their favorite millenial youtubers talking about when doing let's plays of action games. "Batman magnetism" doesn't belong in this discussion at all, no matter how you feel about the combat in NG4.

A reminder of what "bamham suck to target" actually is and why people making the comparison are either being dishonest or just repeating what the ecelebs who talked about action games while they were growing up were saying without putting thought into it.
In Batman you don't even know what combat animation will play when you press the button, there is no consistency, the game just chooses based on distance. Yakumo's moveset move him forward a lot, yes, but a set amount, and the strings are constant and you know what will happen with every button press because you pressed it and the strings are predefined.
Only exception is OTs, those do suck to target, yes.
Good game, by the way, shame the sequels ditched the structure for open world trash. Why does this happen to so many series anyway? Did a single game series got better for going open world?
