It’s what happens when a civilization loses touch with the sacred. Several religions have predicted this:
>In Kali Yuga men and women will live together merely because of superficial attraction, and success in business will depend on deceit. Womanliness and manliness will be judged according to one's expertise in sex, and a man will be known as a brahmana just by his wearing a thread.
>“In the last times, men will be enslaved to pleasures; they will give themselves to every form of vice, unmindful of God.” - St. John Chrysostom
If you know anything about traditional metaphysics, you’ll understand that Man has three centers (see Plato’s tripartite soul). The decline of our civilization corresponds to our collectively losing touch with the two higher ones. The West lost the intellectual center with Scholastic nominalism, while the loss of the spirited center occurred with Industrialism. We crave unity but, because we have forgotten those higher aspects of Being, we erroneously believe that sexual union is all there is.
