Ah the way you are putting it does get closer to the heart of what's going on. I don't believe there is a actual spiritual energy, those aren't real, but the emotions that could lead a slave to believing they are absolutely is real.

This is critical. A slave cannot actually live any other way. This is what will always separate them from anything or anybody else. They cannot control themselves, and thus must be bound to the control of another. To pretend otherwise is against the happiness of every party involved.
