Because it's the name that Death calls when it's your time to go. Imagine having to use your legal name, how many people shared the same name as you? Not unique enough at all, you're utterly unique, so you require a unique name that surmises the totality of you. One Name that if uttered it gives you total understanding who you actually are. A True Name is a set of instructions that provides complete understanding about anything. Used positively this is a form of Gnosis that liberates you. Used adversely this can lead to you being enslaved to a power. Your Higher Self has the knowledge of your True Name but is probably loathed to divulge something of grand importance to a simple incarnation such as you. Nevertheless, there are entities that can certainly lead you to places where can seek the knowledge. You heard the legends, Eve being tempted by the Serpent, Odin hanging himself from the World Tree, Prometheus giving the knowledge of fire, the Watchers teaching Man civilization. The price for such knowledge is apparent and total, but if you are willing to pay, and can get the attention of entities, the potential is almost limitless. For example, the maiden Istahar seduced the Watcher Samyaza in to speaking the Explicit Name of God (and giving her his wings), while the angels were thrown into eternal punishment for the corruption, Istahar escaped corruption and punishment to ascend to the heavens.

Quite simply, punishment for this is only if you fail, and the punishment is death for a mortal soul. Immortal souls receive far more gruesome punishments, but you do not count yourself as one of those. Though, if you are truly careless with your True Name, should it be revealed to you, it is not hard for sadistic entity to transform you into an immortal being for your endless torment. Perhaps you pissed off the wrong person several lifetimes ago, and now they have ascended while you languish in mortality. Be careful with who you trust.
