Swinging first is always questionable, especially when it's a woman who will be seen as not responsible because feminism only swings one way.
But he didn't have to swing first. He didn't have to do anything. He could just keep saying no. Then the ball's in her court (ehehehe) to either accept the no or escalate to violence, at which point he could swing back with much less concern. Like if she tried wrenching the ball out of his son's hands he could smack her then. She sues him for assault, he countersues for assault, the video tells the tale.
I think his problem was just that he wanted the situation to be over and that was the only solution he could come up with. If he'd been more comfortable with just living in that moment, he could've gone with
