Insecurity. They have to have people agree with them in order for them to feel good about their own choices. They're trying to fit in. They're seeking validation. When they don't get it from you (because you have different preferences/situaton/whatever) they panic and they have to start justifying their decision.
Even though they said a lot of dumb shit you can easily disprove the problem is that this kind of person isn't smart enough to follow those arguments, and more importantly they've already made up their mind and are willing to invent bullshit to win the argument.
It's got nothing to do with "gun owners" either. It happens with everything. Ford vs. Chevy. Coke vs. Pepsi, my favorite sports team vs your favorite sports team. People love to argue about shit and take it personally.
