Tariffs damage your global reputation, hurt citizens, hurt businesses, and make the government seem incompetent and isolationist. They're a braindead policy that you couldn't sell to a retard, a century ago. These days, cultists are willing to defend it because they're madly in love with Israel or something.

If a state needs to raise money from its people, the easiest method would be to simply raise taxes. The issue with the American state is that it's currently an oligarchy ran by a cabinet of the ultrawealthy 1% who want a surveillance state without freedom. So, when you see "we can raise trillions by taxing corporations just a little more", they see "I'll have to pay more money- I won't."

The only people who benefit are unelected bureaucrats who will never be held responsible for their actions, or people who've formed cults where their flock are literally incapable of holding them responsible for their actions.
