Man you just nailed what I've been trying to articulate for months. ZZZ really feels like that turn of the millennium anime show with some fanservice that mostly had self contained episodes and some crumbs for overarching plot at the end of each one that. I watched so many of those shows as a kid, normally they would end by episode 24 too so there was no second season. This format has made ZZZ a comfort game for me.
