It really only matters for master league. most of the time, it seems people will put a defender into slot

otherwise it doesn't matter. I guess on certain stages you can put a unit with a MAP attack in position 1, 2, or 3 so you can use it right at the beginning of the stage and hit several enemies at once, I guess

you can literally tap the option on your formation screen to see literally where each unit goes. unit movement in master league is determined by mobility, though.
