I went through a similar thought process. It's rough out there and I eventually gave up and saved up to go big.
I recently purchased my first pair of raw denim, thanks to being lucky enough to have a local workshop and store nearby that makes them with imported Nihon Menpu. So I could try them on and check the fit, get them hemmed and everything.
After a 15% discount and taxes, the total cost was $400. I 100% would not have done it if it were only available online but it's a little reassuring that they have no marketing budget and I can get it repaired there.
I got it because I genuinely needed new blue jeans to be my daily driver, and the unique character of being local. They sold 1% spandex stuff too, but there is little reason to half ass it if I can get something similar at American Eagle.
