It's not that they didn't recognize his problem because any competent doctor could diagnose a degenerative chronic condition. The issue wasn't that Kawhi's doctors would provide a different diagnosis, it's that they were going to support his assertion that he just needed to fuck off for weeks at a time like he wanted to do because they worked for him. Whereas the team doctors weren't obliged to kiss his ass and told the team he would need frequent rest but could play more often than his doctors were claiming.

Basically, Kawhi wanted to do what he's been doing with Clippers and just go AWOL until he felt like playing again and the Spurs (correctly) found that to be a untenable position because they're not run by gullible retards like the Clippers are.

Although keep in mind this was all more or less a pretense anyway. Kawhi just wanted to go to LA so he manufactured a beef that didn't need to happen as an excuse. At the time people weren't sure because it sounded a little sus but they didn't want to believe a player would just flat out lie and malign an organization that had a great reputation but now that we know Kawhi is a self-serving liar who gives no fucks about anything it's pretty obvious the Spurs did nothing wrong besides not being in Los Angeles and asking him to show up for work occasionally.
