I'm an Earth scientist (I do environmental science). This is the difference between astronomical seasons and meteorological seasons. This is because Earth's atmosphere takes time to heat up and cool down.

So according to an astronomer summer ends on September 21st but according to a meteorologist summer ends August 31st.
