The real englightenment was mathematical. Great minds starting with Descartes and leading to D'Alembert and others.
As Kenneth Clark the historian said; the main thing separating us from the ancient world world is that fact that during the Englightenment the French created more mathematics than all of human history previous to it.
Are we headed for barbarity? Hard to say. We could be headed to a new golden age. It's hard to figure out looking around at your immediate circumstances which admittedly are disconcerting. But if you did live in the Englightenment you'd probably find it unnerving to see mobs parading down the main street brandishing severed heads on bloody pikes.
