This entire dynamic has been predicted for decades ever since modern surveillance methods and fires became well known. To survive on a modern battlefield, you either gain full spectrum dominance over the enemy, or you fuck around like what's going on in Ukraine. Never mind that the only reason the war went this way is because Russia outright failed early in the war. Three-days-to-Kiev didn't work out and Russia never had the ability to win outside of that.
