Meursault's opening line, and being partially characterized by Gloom, implies that he feels guilty about his maman's death; her death itself is either the precursor to, or consequence of his sun incident.
It's possible Meursault felt a connection to Heathcliff because he was similarly losing himself over killing Catherine, or he was selfishly running defense for Heathcliff because he didn't want to be exposed to the same ballpark of emotions he's experienced already. Until he gets more spotlight you can argue for him either way.
