Tremeres were mages who went "no, fuck magic, it's getting out of style anyway, we'll drink blood instead" and became vampires, losing their magic in the process, as they are no longer human. The Tremere boss then diablerized (i.e eat the soul) of an Antedeluvian to get more powerful, and then systematically erased the genocided of that Antedeluvian. Then they started stealing vampire magic from everyone else, and killing everyone who knew more vampire magic than them (this includes Tzimische, Assamites, Setites, etc). Then they told everyone they were the only real clan to know vampire magic, as they killed everyone else who knew it.

As a Tremere, you're mind controlled by the other Tremere to do Tremere thing, it's called the Pyramid. The mind control has been going on for so long the clan has a weakness to mind control, which is kind of their clan curse.
