Partly because it became a board meme an eternity ago, partly because you're not allowed to have fun or like things. There are real posters here that think running around yelling "BANG BANG!" with vaguely gun shaped sticks would be more useful. Back in the old days groups like the infamous "Green Mountain Rangers" thought they were every bit as good as actual SOF guys and took themselves super seriously which really poisoned the well on the sport for a lot of people. It's a lot less fun when you're at an event and some retard starts screaming at you because you didn't follow his orders and he's totes a higher rank or some other bullshit of the sort.
Personally I've played in the past and it's definitely got benefits. You can get airshit that is as close as possible to being a 1:1 copy of your actual gun and you can mount all your real shit to them if you feel like it. You can shoot at other people who are actively trying to shoot you with theirs. Sure you can't really simulate some of the malfunctions, realistic range, and the recoil will be nothing even with the best GBBs, but there's definitely value in it. Between it and VR I'm a lot more confident I'll be able to pull the trigger on my actual guns if I'm ever in a situation where I need to. Also REALLY good for learning to use camo and not being seen if you do it innawoods.
The biggest thing whether you're just out to have fun or you want to train is to find a group of people that are not shitbags.

Average Joe is not using simunitions for anything, same for MILES gear. He said TREAT it like military, not that it is. If you're too stupid to understand a real gun would have killed you hiding in that bush that's blocking all those BBs it's not going to matter what training aid you use.
Unlike MILES you can actually get airshit. Unlike simunitions you can get airshit from all sorts of sources and the ammo is extremely cheap. You can use it in a lot more places too.
