I always thought they just made the mask look like this to sort of exaggerate happiness/laughter like a cartoon. But there really are Jews who look like this, specifically with the crescent eyes (but no epicanthic fold like actual Asians), thick eyebrows, droopy or hooked nose, and curled up wry smile.

It's actually kind of fascinating from a scientific point of view. I'm deeply intrigued by it, particularly that the Punics used a certain type of plant for religious rituals that grows near them that causes a person's face to seize up and give a menacing/sardonic grin (where the word comes from).

The Smile horror movies are about people who get cursed from looking at an evil smile, and I wonder if the director knowningly was tapping into the Punic religious ceremonies. Or basically that the Punics/Phoenicians/northern Israelites/Jews/etc. embody the very real "smile" curse as it were.
