If you don't have a comfortable and fulfilling life, then it is a waste of time. Gamedev is best as a hobby. It's ok to do something because you like doing it, but it's probably not ok to use gamedev as a coping mecahnism to feel some level of control when the rest of your life is a mess, or to imagine that if you just make a game and sell it for millions of dollars then it'll rescue you from a lifetime of bad decisions. If you think gamedev is a manchild fantasy then your brain is probably trying to tell you that you should be spending your time and energy on more pressing matters.

You are right, but I did gamedev when I was a kid and it got me into programming and eventually led to a career as a software developer. Everyone starts somewhere. But back then I had no delusions about publishing and making big money off a game and I was literally a child. Some people come here, watch their first brackeys tutorial and think they're going to release the next lethal company and transform their lives, those people need a reality check and to be told that they're at least 10 years of practice away from being able to make a commercial game.
