Check out this book (this is an unpaid advertisement) The Fort Bragg Cartel, it came out last month and is about 12 hours long. The author certain has a hate boner for the military, but a lot of stuff in there is very interesting.

The central narrative surrounds a delta dude that went off the rails, ends up smuggling tons of drugs home, along with a lot of other elite mil members. They were arrested numerous times for various crime, but nothing stuck and they usually walked.

This could be a similar situation, just with the DEA
