DA:O was really interesting to play again and again because of how the world reacted to your character. Your race actually mattered and influenced your endings. The fact that the protagonist has no voice lines helps flesh out the dialogue which leads to more character exploration with the companions. The game had a good balance. For ex: There was rape but it never was presented in a political light. What I mean by that is that you don't have an elf who was raped look directly at the camera and say "All men are evil rapists. Especially those damn republicans!" It was a plot device meant to display the brutality of the world without being tasteless. They even let you fuck some dude's crush and brag to him about it. There was freedom. All they had to do was clean up the graphics, fine-tune the combat, and just decide where the story will go and how to unfold it without making every single game the deciding factor on whether or not the entire world will be destroyed. DA: Awakening was the beginning of the end. It should have been an actual sequel. DA2 completely fucked up. As another anon said, they wanted to keep the heterosexual audience but doubled down on gay writing. The concept of Kirkwall is cool but the execution was fucking abysmal. Everything that could have gone wrong went wrong with that and every game has been built off of DA2. The current writing team does not understand subtlety and have lost sight of why people enjoyed the first game.
