It's a type of double think. If you're actually a tolerant person, you're also tolerant towards people who are intolerant. Obviously. But to them tolerant means being intolerant towards people they perceive as intolerant. Hence their whole world-view is built on a logical fallacy that doesn't add up. Therefore it is expected and inevitable that the way they think become inconsistent and strange.

The reason why actually intolerant people are more consistent and rational is because their world-view is coherent, so they don't suffer the same problem.
