You can afford to skip anyone if you aren't chasing scores. Everyone can do the story content, borrowing units ensures you'll get enough to full rewards in companio.
I think my big problem with p5x is there's little reason for me to pull any characters besides I like seeing them when I fight.
Social links aren't locked by owning a character (thank god), and cannot even s-link any of the p5 crew, or I'm assuming other future persona collabs either.
I really could have skipped futuba and all I'd miss is seeing her smile during fights when she's being le hacker woman.
If you are chasing scores, yea buy her, but the reality of score chasing is whales win.
